Link building is a Search Engine Optimisation technique where a website owner attempts to build revelant, quality inbound links to their website with the intentions of increasing the website importance, and by this increasing ranking in the Search Engines.
The process of researching and requesting links to build a site’s link popularity is called link Building
This can involve exchange links with relevant sites and or even paying for links.
In search engine optimisation, “off page” factors have become more and more important as they relate to rankings. In particular, solid link popularity can literally make or break a site with the search engines.
Link popularity refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to a site. These other sites consider your site important enough to link to. So, in the engine’s view, your site is considered important as well.
However, one of the most difficult areas of SEO is link building and link popularity. Why? Because the engines don’t want “artificially created” (or useless) links, so there are no easy ways to build link popularity. The days of link farms and huge link exchange programs are over. Try those strategies now and you can easily find yourself booted out of an engine.
Rather, the engines want links from authoritative sites, or links from sites that share the same focus as your site.
But besides the link popularity you gain by getting an authoritative site to link to you, you also gain additional visibility for your Web site. So, when working on building link popularity, don’t forget those two basic reasons for requesting links.
There are two types of links you can establish on the web:
Reciprocal links
Link exchange is an easier way to establish links from other websites to your website.
In link exchange process, you trade links with prospective partner sites by offering a link to their site from your own site.
This method is a fast way to establish several hundred links to your website. However, it may not get you great benefits.
One-way links
To establish ‘only-incoming’ links also called ‘one-way links’ or ‘Non-Reciprocal links’.
Only incoming links are the links established on the other websites where you do not need to link back to them.

Strategic link building is about establishing your competitive position in the online marketplace that already exists, albeit informally around your industry sector.
Link building is not about search engine optimisation, it’s not about boosting your Google PageRank, it’s not about publishing a link directory and it’s not about swapping links with as many other websites as possible.
If you’ve gone through all the hard work of a link building campaign, you expect to be rewarded with some impressive links. The reality is that many people are disappointed with the trickle of links and the trickle of traffic that their efforts produce.
